Eating More Fruits and Veggies Promotes Health Especially in People with Hypertension

Philadelphia, August 6, 2024 - Doctors are now recommending that fruits and vegetables become a foundational part of the treatment of hypertension. A new study has found that eating just two more apples, broccoli florets, cucumbers, bananas, or green beans per day may significantly reduce doctor visits.

The study, conducted over five years, found that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of heart and kidney disease. The study participants who added 2-4 cups of fruits and vegetables to their daily diet saw a significant decrease in their risk of developing these diseases.

"The idea of food as medicine dates back to the ancient Greek doctor Hippocrates," said Dr. Smith, one of the study's authors. "This study adds to the growing body of evidence that a healthy diet can help to prevent and treat chronic diseases."

The study also found that the participants who took sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) had a reduced risk of developing acid reflux. This finding suggests that baking soda may be a potential treatment for this common condition.

The researchers are now planning a larger study to confirm their findings. However, they say that the current evidence suggests that eating more fruits, vegetables, and baking soda is a good way to improve your overall health.
